Design Granite Table Tops

Granite's hard surface measures on the Mohs scale around 6 to 7. Its ability to withstand daily use and abuse makes it a good choice for table tops. Designing a table top requires a handful of decisions in order to be made to properly fit a table base. Larger table tops may need to be manufactured in sections and require a seam due to the size limitations of granite slab. Granite suppliers may manufacturer table tops or use a sub-contractor to cut and finish the granite for them.

Instructions as follows:

Firstly, assess the base upon which the top will sit and decide upon a table top size. Measure the spread of the base's feet. For example, a metal column base with four prong feet (meaning four touch points to the floor) has a 22 inch by 22 inch spread on the feet (obtained by measuring across opposing feet). For a spread this length, the top should be no larger than 30 inches in diameter or 30 by 30 inches square in order for the table to be sturdy and not tip over.

Secondly, research the different edge details and granite colors available by visiting local granite suppliers. Most will have a set of line drawings that show the standard edge profiles they work and each will have a group of standard granite colors they have access to. Ask about the thickness the granite comes in. Ask to see samples of their work. Make notes, take digital photos (always ask permission to take a reference photo) or ask for a copy of their materials.

Thirdly, assemble the following by referencing the information gathered by visiting granite supplier: choose an edge detail, a granite color, a table top size/shape and a table top thickness.

Fourthly, obtain price quotes from several suppliers using the decisions made about the table top. Ask about lead times and deposits that are required to begin the making of the granite table top.

Tips & Warnings

Table base manufacturers are a great resource for making decisions about table top sizes. Match the existing table base with one in their catalog, then look to see what sized tabletops are recommended for that base.

A table top thickness may be limited to the thickness of the available granite although edge thickness can be added as a lip around the bottom edge of the top. This type of application will create a seam and is only necessary to hide bulky base attachments or to mimic the look of thicker stone.
