How to Care for Granite Countertops After Installation
Granite countertops offer elegance and beauty to kitchens and bathrooms. Caring for granite countertops after installation is important is preserving their appearance and the integrity of the stone. Granite is durable and can withstand a lot of wear and tear. Nevertheless, properly maintaining granite countertops will ensure that they last for many years to come.
Allow your granite countertops four to six weeks to fully cure. During this time, avoid excessive cleaning. Do not use any cleaners containing wax, grease or soaps.

Blot up spills from the granite promptly. Wine, juice, sauces, soda, oil and butter are just a few of the substances that can stain your granite if not cleaned up promptly. Wipe the spill up with a damp rag.
Use coasters on your granite countertop. Although granite will not etch if sealed properly, using coasters under glasses, cans and bottles will further protect the surface from staining.
Place hot pads or trivets under pots and pans. While granite can withstand excessive heat from hot pots and pans, the surface may become scratched by grit that is on the bottom of the pan.
Use a cutting board for cutting rather than cutting foods directly on the granite countertop. This will protect the countertop from scratches.
Place perfumes, hair care products, lotions and other toiletries in a basket on the countertop rather than sitting them directly onto the granite. These products may cause stains on the granite.
Avoid using acidic cleaners, cleaners containing alkalis, abrasive cleaners, bleach or degreasers when cleaning granite countertops. Vinegar, lemon and orange cleaners and ammonia should also be avoided. These products will deteriorate the granite sealer, making your granite susceptible to damage.
Clean your granite countertops on a regular basis. Daily, light cleaning can be done by wiping down the countertop with a rag and hot water. For deeper cleaning, use a granite cleaner. Remove surface stains from the granite by mixing equal parts rubbing alcohol and warm water into a spray bottle. Spray the solution onto the stain and wipe it with a soft cloth. Buff the countertop with a dry cloth.
Seal your granite countertops twice a year. The sealer on the countertop will begin to deteriorate over time. Sealing the countertop twice a year will offer the best protection.
